TOKYO -- Iran will receive medical devices from Japanese companies under a 1.2 billion yen ($10.5 million) grant aid agreement being entered into Saturday.
Japan will transfer about 40 mammography machines to the Iranian health ministry through the official development assistance program. Fujifilm Holdings and Toshiba unit Toshiba Medical Systems are among the companies apparently showing interest in the upcoming bidding.
Iran imports an estimated $800 million or so in medical devices, with European companies already taking an early start. Using ODA as a gateway, Japanese corporations will develop the market with ultrasonic diagnostic equipment, endoscopes, and other offerings they are strong in.
With the lifting of economic sanctions, businesses around the world are rushing to take advantage of the promising Iranian market. And Japan, as part of its growth strategy, plans to help its corporations make inroads into the Middle Eastern country.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to visit Iran this year, and Tokyo is to resume yen loans after a 15-year hiatus. Infrastructure work involving Japanese companies, including repairs to fossil-fuel-fired power plants, is also under consideration.
